Crash 'Em Up

My friend Carrie asked me this past week if I wanted to go to the Demolition Derby. My answer was immediately yes, although I wasn't sure why. So we rode our bikes to the dirt track in town and watched a bunch of cars crash into each other until only one was still in motion. It's fun to play Redneck!

Sharon: I found a TON of berries when I went picking WITHOUT Carrie. I'm thinking maybe she's a jinx. (Hopefully she doesn't read my blog because I haven't exactly told her that in person yet.) Thanks for the tip about Delta berries though. I certainly wouldn't mind a little road trip to Delta.

Mary: Enough with the short jokes! Just kidding. Being in Homer again reminded me of when you were visiting Alaska, and we all went to Homer when the sun was shining! That is certainly a great memory.

Robin: The halibut tastes great, but I didn't even try to eat it all in one sitting. I have a bunch more in the freezer to last me through the next few months. I think I ended up with about 30 pounds of meat.

I hope everyone is doing well! You're all welcome to visit. Well, most of you anyway.

The Gardens

Mette and I went to the UAF Gardens over lunch. It was a record high temperature day when we hit 82 degrees. The sun was blazing! We saw flowers...

...fruits...

...and, in true Alaska fashion, a cabbage bigger than my head!

Just For The Halibut

After all of the work was finished, Tom, Jeremy, and I went halibut fishing in Cook Inlet. Guess who caught the biggest fish.

Across The Bay

The flight over to Nanwalek on Tuesday afforded beautiful views along Kachemak Bay,

and things were looking lush in Nanwalek as another beautiful day was ripe for enjoying.

Sometimes our field work is way too much like a vacation rather than work, but not all of the time. I've just been extremely lucky.

On The Road Again

Well, I have not had to travel to Homer for the last couple of months, but it was time to return once again to download data from our field sites and make sure that all of the equipment was still in good working condition. Monday was spent in airports and on planes before visiting our field site at Anchor Point.

Jeremy and I were met with gorgeous weather after leaving a cloudy Fairbanks. A field of fireweed about as tall as I am had grown at our site since the last time I was there...

...the volcanoes across Cook Inlet were fully visible (This one being Mount Redoubt, but there are two others that were out at well.)...

...and the Homer Spit was lookin' good.

Birthdays and Berries!

Today Carrie and I went to pick blueberries!! We didn't find very many, which seems to be an annual tradition for us, but we had a great time chatting it up in the woods.

Carrie gave me a Alaska Berry Picker for my birthday, which is kind of like a bear claw with a container attached to it, so it was only appropriate that we give it a try. We both agreed that it gets a thumbs up! Definitely a time saver over picking by hand.

Yup, speaking of my birthday and berries, all of my best girlfriends surprised me with dinner and a party with a blueberry ice cream cake. They're the best! At work, they made me wear a silly hat, so needless to say, I had a great time gaining a whole year in one day. Thanks to everyone for your best wishes and generous nature.

Harry Potter and the Indigo Girls

Well, not a whole lot has been going on in my life lately other than reading Harry Potter Books 6 and 7, although I did manage to go to a concert this weekend. The Indigo Girls came to Fairbanks on Saturday night and rocked The Blue Loon to a sold out crowd!

PS No pictures were allowed during the show, so if anyone asks, I didn't take this one.
